Taking steps on the journey of truth and reconciliation

2024-06-06

This National Indigenous History Month we invite you to join us in honouring the history of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people, while also taking time to understand the continued effect of colonization on Indigenous people within our health care system.

Systemic racism and discrimination against Indigenous people in Canada persists. We strive to demand from our health care system culturally safe, fair, and equitable care. This includes moving forward on our journey of truth and reconciliation and doing the necessary work to understand the survivor experience and intergenerational trauma of harm within our health care system. It also includes working alongside Indigenous people.

Since signing the Declaration of Commitment in November 2022, the CFPC, along with our Indigenous Health Committee, have implemented various initiatives that support our goal of creating a better health care system. However, much more must be done.

During National Indigenous History Month, National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, and beyond, we encourage you to join us on this journey of addressing anti-Indigenous racism. It is our collective duty as family doctors to create and maintain a health care system that is culturally safe and equitable.

Sincerely,

Mike Green, MD, MPH, CCFP, FCFP, FCAHS
