Statement on the importance of rural emergency medicine

2025-07-17

The CFPC stands behind family physicians practising in rural and remote areas in Canada who bring compassionate, comprehensive, and quality care to patients.

More than half of all medical care is provided by family physicians, including in emergency rooms in rural communities. Rural hospitals save lives.

Family physicians providing care in rural hospitals work closely with other allied health professionals to provide team-based care to patients and advocate for better health care for their patients and communities.

If governments fail to invest in and track ER outcomes, the last thing we should do is abandon rural communities or suggest they do not deserve vital emergency services. Giving up on rural health care is giving up on rural Canadians.

The CFPC stands shoulder to shoulder with the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada (SRPC). Please read their statement in response to a Globe and Mail article about rural hospitals.
