CFPC’s New CEO

2024-05-01

On behalf of the Interim CEO Search Committee, I am pleased to announce that we have successfully completed our search and that Dr. Michael (Mike) Allan will serve as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) effective May 1, 2024, to October 31, 2027.

Dr. Allan grew up in Brockville, Ontario. He completed his medical school and residency at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Allan served in the Canadian Armed Forces with the Pacific Fleet for four years following graduation, travelling to five countries, including a short stint practising in the United Kingdom, and was a doctor at sea on a naval ship.

Dr. Allan took a faculty appointment with the University of Alberta and practised in an underserviced community clinic in team-based care. He started the PEER (Patients, Experience, Evidence, and Research) group with his colleagues, with the intention of creating education and clinical guidance by family physicians, for family physicians. He also helped create Tools for Practice, the Best Science Medicine Podcast, and Simplified Guidelines. Dr. Allan is the recipient of provincial, national, and international awards for education, research, and professional work.

Moving back to British Columbia in 2018, Dr. Allan concluded his clinical career in rural primary care on Salt Spring Island, where he resides.

He has served the CFPC as Director of Practice Support and, in the last few years, he shared the role of Executive Director of Professional Development and Practice Support.

The CFPC undertook a robust process with 17 nominees, nine of whom submitted full applications.

I would like to thank the search committee members and members who provided nominations.

During the search, it became evident that a two-year term would not be sufficient to advance our short- and medium-term goals. A longer period of three-and-a-half years was agreed to and as a result we are dropping the use of the word “interim” for this appointment.

I would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Nancy Fowler for leading the CFPC as Deputy CEO since last autumn. She returns to her role as the CFPC’s Executive Director of Academic Family Medicine.

Thank you, Dr. Fowler, and congratulations Dr. Allan!

Sincerely,

Michael E. Green, MD, MPH, CCFP, FCFP, FCAHS
President
