Celebrating World Family Doctor Day – May 19, 2012
May 15, 2012
As a member of the World Family Doctor Organization (Wonca) the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) joins with our international colleagues to celebrate World Family Doctor Day 2012 and acknowledge the central role of our specialty in the delivery of personal, comprehensive and continuous health care for all of our patients. It’s a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the progress being made in family medicine and the special contributions of family doctors. Family doctors share the bond of working together to enhance our profession and the important care that we provide to our patients.
On World Family Doctor Day, the CFPC celebrates its members and the great work that we do together to advance primary care in Canada. Over the last year, we have made significant progress on two initiatives that are priorities because of the very real benefits they offer to family doctors, other health professionals and, most of all, our patients across the country.
The first is the introduction of A Vision for Canada: Family Practice - The Patient’s Medical Home – a model of primary care that provides timely access to health care services for all Canadians through their family practice settings: a place where all patients have personal family doctors and where all their health care requirements are coordinated for timely access to the full range of medical and health care services they may require. The CFPC is dedicated to the implementation of the Patient’s Medical Home vision.
Another key priority for the College is the implementation of the Triple C - a competency-based curriculum for family medicine education that is comprehensive, focused on continuity of education and patient care, and centred in family medicine. The curriculum is designed to enhance family medicine education and training to ensure that our medical graduates are among the best trained and most competent in the world. The CFPC is currently working closely with all medical schools across the country and supporting the implementation of the Triple C.
These are two of many CFPC initiatives that we will celebrate on World Family Doctor Day. Please join with us to take pride in the outstanding level of health care that we are honoured to have in Canada and to thank the very special family doctors who make it possible.
Yours truly,
Sandy Buchman, MD, CCFP, FCFP
