Family Medicine Forum 2013!

Thousands of medical students, residents, practising and retired family physicians gathered in beautiful Vancouver on November 6-9, 2013 for the annual Family Medicine Forum. This served as an excellent opportunity to meet old friends, form new networks, and learn about what’s new in family medicine.

The SOR partnered with the First Five Years to host the Transitioning into Practice Q&A Workshop with recent family medicine graduates. Highlights included discussions on finances (eg, when to approach the bank, what is a good interest rate, when to incorporate, partnerships versus associations), locums (eg, key questions to ask before agreeing to a contract), and training beyond residency. View the CFPC SOR Transitioning into Practice handout from this session.

The CFPC SOR also hosted a medical student and resident luncheon at the Vancouver Fairmont Waterfront Hotel. This provided an informal setting to meet with future FM residents and learn about new happenings in medical schools across Canada.

Duty Hours Statement

Stemming from our Representatives meeting in September 2013, the need for a Duty Hours Taskforce was identified. The inaugural goal of this taskforce is to create a Duty Hours statement that can serve as a reference for Canadian family medicine residents and programs. This taskforce has held discussions and is in the process of reviewing literature. Stay tuned for the official Section of Residents Duty Hours Statement.
