High Standards in Medical Education
Promoting high-quality health care is achieved by encouraging and supporting high standards of medical education at all levels and by developing a range of programs and services in continuing physician education.
We play a key role in maintaining the reputation of excellence of family medicine training at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in all 17 Canadian medical schools. We evaluate and regularly accredit the family medicine residency training programs.
Continuing Professional Development
In addition to training, we are active in continuing professional development (CPD). Members are required to participate in CPD. In 1995, we introduced MAINPRO® (Maintenance of Proficiency). Designed to be flexible and fair, MAINPRO is based on adult learning principles, enabling members to maintain their practice knowledge and skills. It includes the guidelines for maintenance of membership and maintenance of certification.
We produce a number of publications, educational as well as policy and program related:
- Canadian Family Physician, the College’s monthly clinical journal, has a circulation of almost 30,000. Read more
- eNews is the College’s electronic member newsletter and is distributed 10 times per year to College members
- Many other published reports on committee work and research initiatives are available on request
Annual Scientific Assemblies (ASAs) are organized at the provincial and national levels. These meetings focus on continuing medical education and our business activities. Our goal for each ASA/FMF is to expand the knowledge of delegates and present an opportunity for physicians to meet.
World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA)
We are the national representative body for WONCA. WONCA promotes medical education, research, and service.
